The growing travel, fashion and lifestyle influencer, Kara Harms, launched her profile just over a year ago. Her dream was to be in San Francisco to start a new life, and a blog relating to fashion. In just under a year she has amassed nearly 15k followers as a social media influencer, totaling 9.5k followers on Instagram as well. Far from a small accomplishment for a person who only launched her blog a year ago.
We were lucky enough to ask Kara a few questions on how it is living a life now that she once dreamed of, and what it’s like to be a fashion influencer.
What is the meaning of your website ‘Whimsy Soul’?
The definition of “whimsy” is something that is fanciful or odd and that has always stayed with me. I’ve always been that type of person to see happiness everywhere since it’s very good for the soul. I will put on a dress because it makes me happy, not because it’s trendy and if you want to take an impromptu road trip across the state one weekend, I will say yes in a heartbeat. The title came together and I felt like it summed my mindset and lifestyle up flawlessly.
You have an impressive Instagram page which compliments your site really well. Do you get more pleasure from one or not?
Thank you! Because Instagram is so social, I’ve had more conversations with readers on the platform, but there is not one that I like over the other since they go so well together. The blog component will always be the core of this Whimsy Soul brand and Instagram and other platforms are an exceptional means to get the word out and share daily moments which don’t have a place on the site.
What is it like to live a day in the life of Kara?
Each day begins at 7am for me so I have enough time to answer Whimsy Soul mails, do last minute edits on this morning’s newsletter, pin images from that day’s blog article, etc. Before I rush off to work (I now work full time as the Marketing Director with Margaret Elizabeth, a jewelry boutique). I usually get home around 6pm, do some yoga, cook dinner since I love cooking, and operate on anything else for Whimsy Soul that has to get done. In the summer when the light lasts into the evening, I use this opportunity to snap blog photos. Otherwise weekends are dedicated to photographing articles and composing them. I think I’m a workaholic — I have a really hard time just sitting and doing nothing, which is one of the reasons I love blogging so much. There’s always something to do or discuss!
Where do you get your sense of style?
I gather my style inspiration from different bloggers, Pinterest and friends. While I love having unique outfits, my sense of fashion is actually pretty sensible. I think that it stems from my Midwestern roots — once I get dressed I constantly consider how cold I will be sitting at the office with that skirt on, or how much I need to walk daily and adapt as needed.
Which brands would you like to be working with?
During this past year I have had the opportunity to work with a lot of really great brands from fashion to beauty to travel. This year I would really like to establish some longer relationships with brands rather than one-off projects. I also really want to expand into more travel, forming partnerships with hotels and fashion brands that appreciate influencers who produce content when traveling is on the top of my list.
Have you got specific blog/social networking influencer ambitions, and if so what are they?
I would love to be a full-time blogger, it is my dream job to be able to create something every day and operate my own company on my own schedule. My main focus would be to keep growing and keep putting out great content so that dream can be a reality.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
As I said, I want to enlarge my travel content, so maybe now 5 years from today I will be checking mails from a Paris café before going off into a shoot. I like that idea.
