How I Met Your Father is suprisingly good

Finally, after resisting myself for about a month, I finally gave in and watched How I met your father. How I met your mother (HIMYM) has been my comfort show since its start. I was a teenager when it first started and that show with sex and the city was my new york (American) dream. After sex and the city reboot “Just Like that”, I gave up on reboots. Be it star trek discovery to the star wars book of Boba Fett, the reboot takes away the essence of the original. And being self-proclaimed one of the biggest fans of HIMYM minus the ending(its sucks, it was like my best friend going back to his toxic ex after minor inconvenience ).

So after giving it a thought I finally got myself a HULU account and gave How I met your father a chance. And to my surprise, it was really good. It is the same old story, but this time the mother older Sophie, portrayed by Kim Cattrell ( i missed her on Just like that) narrates the story to her son. And in my opinion, this is something the sitcom genre was missing in the current time. There are some good shows like Ted lasso, black-ish, or the Goldberg’s but since the end of HIMYM in 2014, there wasn’t any sitcom that dealt with friends in their 30s hanging out. So now when I am in my 30s, I am happy to see a group of people in their 30s dealing with their life, having time to socialize while working which I cannot do to save my life.

Although the premise is similar to the original show, How I Met your father is not HIMYM. There is no Ted, Marshall, Lilly, Barney, and Robin. The show doesn’t have any catchy catchphrase as the original had, there is no bro code or the playbook. There is no Barney who in a crooked way was the life of HIMYM. There is no cuteness like Marshall & Lilly who to this day are my couple goals. But again this is not HIMYM, we do see the character similarities in the show though.

Unlike the original How I met your Father starts on the day Sophie portrayed by Hilary Duff, not only meets the father of her son but also the gang she will be hanging with in the future. The gang consists of Valentina (Sophie’s best friend and roommate), Charlie (Valentina’s British Boyfriend), Jesse (aspiring musician, uber driver that Sophie meets in 1st episode), Sid (Jesse’s best friend and bar owner), and Ellen (Jesse adopted sister). How I met your Father has an inclusive cast consisting of persons of color to queer members in the friend circle. There are secondary characters introduced as well such as Hanna, Sid’s fiance that he proposed on the first episode just like in the original with Lily and Marshall. Or Ian, Sophie’s tinder date who moved to Australia by the end of the episode just like Ted and Victoria in HIMYM.

There are many similarities or reminisce of the original show if you observe keenly. I personally liked the idea of dating and making friends in 2022. We see Sophie on her 87th tinder date, hopelessly romantic and optimistic just like Ted. And to be honest it is relevant in today’s world. We meet people via dating app and is this show sponsored by Tinder? As it is almost mentioned in all episode and there has been 3 out by the time I am writing this. And you make friends out of nowhere. I resonate with it so much. I made friends with my best girlfriend now out of nowhere, and this show shows that you can form a good friend circle even in your 30s.

It is nothing like the original, we cannot have Barney in today’s canceling world. He was a problematic character from the beginning but we accepted his flaws as we knew he was a fictional character but now everything is getting canceled. But at the end of the first episode, we find out Sid and Jesse’s apartment is Ted, Marshall, and Lily’s apartment from the original show.

Overall How I met your father is a sitcom about a group of 5-6 friends who are in their 30s living their picture-perfect life in New York just like previous shows from the 90s,00s; Friends and How I met your mother, the only difference is that How I met your father is based in 2022 and this is much more relatable than other shows now.

Also, remember the song “500 miles” by the proclaimers in the original series, I think we have a new song for this show which is “Drops of Jupiter” by Train which is one of my favorite songs.

It is a good light-hearted watch about some people in their 30s figuring out themselves and finding love along the way. It is not Ted Lasso feel-good comedy but it is the gush of fresh air that network channels were missing. Give this show an unbiased chance, you will enjoy and find easter eggs from its predecessor.
